Oben Health

Revolutionize your health journey with Oben - Integrating patients, providers, and barbers for unified, optimal wellness solutions.

Info

As the sole UX/UI designer at Oben Health, a digital healthcare startup, I focused on empowering low-income patients of color with chronic heart disease. My work involved designing 3 cross-platform digital products that addressed the everyday challenges faced by patients and the healthcare system. These products aimed to improve heart health management and make healthcare more accessible and effective for this underserved demographic.

Tl;dr
In summary, here is what I accomplished:
01

Led the design and launch of 3 cross-platform digital products, creating an integrated system that addressed user needs while ensuring consistency through a comprehensive design system.

02

Collaborated with the CEO, PMs, healthcare professionals, and stakeholders to develop the UX strategy for Oben Health, focusing on improving healthcare accessibility for underserved communities.

03

Worked closely with engineers to implement the designs, ensuring user experience principles were upheld throughout development and that solutions addressed real-world healthcare challenges.

Problem
Black adults face a higher risk of dying from cardiovascular disease, with 1 in 5 missing essential preventative screenings.

People of color face structural barriers to accessing healthcare, leading to a higher risk of untreated conditions like hypertension. Traditional healthcare systems often fail to reach this population due to challenges like time off work, transportation, and mistrust of clinical settings.

Solution
Oben Health’s Innovative Barbershop Care Model

Barbershops see more monthly visits than clinics ever could – and they're the key to saving lives. Oben Health transforms barbershops into community-driven health hubs, offering cardiovascular screenings and care coordination through 3 integrated digital products that automate operations, provide real-time data, and streamline care.

Business Impact
25,000

potential customers including Managed Care Organizations, Accountable Care Organizations, HMOs, FQHCs, and FQHC lookalike centers.

$412 million

in Serviceable Obtainable Market (SOM), representing 18% of the $2.43 billion SAM.

30

trained barbers in 17 barbershops, providing healthcare services to underserved communities through the Oben Health program.

How this works?
Patients now can receive care and support while getting haircuts.

By transforming barbershops into health hubs, Oben Health brings life-saving screenings directly to the community. The frequent visits and strong sense of trust make barbershops the ideal place to engage those who often miss clinic appointments, offering a practical and impactful healthcare solution.

Design Process
Starting with a simple solution: Empowering patients via a mobile app

Our journey began with a mobile app aimed at empowering patients to take control of their health. The app allowed users to track their blood pressure and access educational content about heart health. However, engagement rates were low, and we quickly realized that patients couldn’t succeed without stronger support from healthcare systems and community involvement.

Expanding to 3 products for different users

Patient App:
A mobile platform was the clear choice to keep patients engaged anywhere, anytime, seamlessly fitting into their busy lives.

Physician Dashboard:
A web app designed for physicians to access and monitor patient data in real time, perfectly suited for the clinical setting.

Referal App:
A mobile app designed for quick and easy logging and referrals, perfectly suited for barbers' hands-on work environment.

Final Product 01
Patient App

This app collects patients' health data, engages them daily with educational videos, quizzes, blood pressure tracking, and displays customized treatment plans from assigned physicians and AI-powered health coach.

Prototype 01

Gamification

By using gamification to screen patients for social determinants of health, ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experiences), dietary habits, and stress levels, healthcare providers can engage patients more effectively while gaining deeper insights into their unique needs and challenges.

Prototype 02

AI-powered Health Coach

The AI coach can provide patients with personalized recommendations for improving their health, with patient data collected from screening, such as biometrics, lifestyle habits, and medical history.

Prototype 03

Culturally Competent Design and Content

Customized videos and quizzes, tailored to the Black community, provide culturally competent information on healthy eating habits, stress management, and other important heart health topics.

Final Product 02
Physician Dashboard

A tool  that allows healthcare workers to access patient data, manage treatment plans, and monitor progress.

Prototype 01

Benefit Match & Support

This feature uses app-collected data to match patients with the right healthcare resources, sends them directly to patients, and tracks application status for timely follow-up.

Prototype 02

Healthcare Resource Center

A centralized hub providing social workers with the most up-to-date information, allowing them to easily look up and verify essential data.
